From Sketch to Silver: How Your Custom Jewelry is Made

From Sketch to Silver: How Your Custom Jewelry is Made

There is a special kind of magic that happens when a piece of jewelry is made just for you. It is no longer just silver and stone—it becomes a story, a memory, and a reflection of exactly who you are.

I often get asked what the custom design process looks like. People sometimes feel intimidated by the idea of commissioning a piece, thinking they need to have a perfect design already drawn up in their minds. But the truth is, the best custom pieces start with nothing more than a feeling, a memory, or—in the case of a recent client—a handful of loose gemstones and a love for dragonflies.

Let me take you behind the bench and share the story of how one of my favorite custom pieces came to life.

The Spark: Chris’s Travel Gemstones

Not long ago, a lovely client named Chris from Edmonton reached out to me. Over the years, she had collected some beautiful loose gemstones during her travels. They held wonderful memories of her adventures, but they were just sitting in a drawer because she didn’t know what to do with them.

When we started talking, I learned two important things about Chris: she has a deep love for dragonflies, and because she is wonderfully tall, she loves wearing larger, statement pieces that she can really carry off.

That was our starting point. We didn’t have a finished design yet, just a collection of beautiful travel stones, a dragonfly motif, and a desire to create something bold and meaningful.

The Process: Collaboration and Craftsmanship

The custom process is always a collaboration. After our initial discussions, I sat down at my bench and started sketching. We went back and forth with a few rough ideas, refining the shape and the placement of her stones until we agreed on a design that felt exactly right for her.

Then, the real journey began.

Bringing a sketch to life in sterling silver is a deeply physical process. For Chris’s pendant, I needed to create a structure that was large and striking, yet delicate enough to capture the essence of a dragonfly. I hand-textured the silver wings with swirling patterns to give them movement and life and carefully set her stunning golden and green gemstones down the center to form the body.

I will be completely honest—this piece was a challenge for me! There were a few moments at the bench where I was cursing under my breath as I worked to get the settings absolutely perfect. But that is the reality of handcrafted jewelry. It requires patience, problem-solving, and a lot of heart.

The Final Reveal

When it all finally came together, I fell completely in love with the pendant. The contrast of the bright, faceted gemstones against the textured sterling silver was breathtaking.

But the best part of any custom order is the moment the client puts it on. When Chris received her dragonfly pendant, she sent me a photo of herself wearing it. Seeing her beaming smile, wearing a piece that holds her travel memories and reflects her bold, beautiful spirit—that is exactly why I do what I do.

Ready to Tell Your Story?

You don’t need to be a jewelry designer to commission a custom piece. Whether you have loose stones sitting in a drawer like Chris did, an heirloom piece you want to reimagine, or simply an idea for something that celebrates a milestone in your life, we can bring it to life together.

The process is simple, collaborative, and entirely focused on creating something that makes you feel radiant.

If you have a story you want to tell in silver, I would love to hear it. You can [reach out to me here to start the conversation about your own custom piece].

With love,
