How to Style Your Everyday Jewelry for Fall
Share
Simple ways to wear your favourite sterling silver pieces with cozy sweaters, rich autumn colours, and the clothes you already love.
There's something about those first cool September mornings that makes me want to reach for my favourite sweater.
Here in the Okanagan, the days can still be beautifully warm, but the mornings are beginning to feel different. The light changes, the evenings come a little earlier, and before long, my boots and cozy sweaters are making their way back into my everyday wardrobe.
And I love it.
I've always been drawn to simple, classic clothing. A beautiful sweater, a crisp white shirt, a favourite pair of jeans, and boots that have seen more than a few seasons.
The kind of pieces you reach for year after year because they feel like you.
My jewelry is much the same.
I don't believe you need an entirely different jewelry collection for every season. Often, it's simply a matter of wearing the pieces you already love in a slightly different way.
As we move from summer into autumn, here are five simple ways to style your everyday jewelry with the clothes you're beginning to reach for again.
1. Choose a necklace length that works with your neckline
One of the easiest ways to transition your jewelry into fall is to pay attention to where your necklace sits.
During the summer, a delicate 16-inch necklace looks beautiful against an open neckline. But once we begin wearing thicker sweaters and higher necklines, those shorter chains can disappear into the fabric.
A longer necklace gives your jewelry room to be seen. My Quiet Terrain Picture Jasper Necklace is one option to explore when styling a simple sweater.
For a turtleneck or simple crewneck sweater, try a necklace that falls below the neckline. A 24- to 28-inch necklace can create a beautiful vertical line and add interest to an otherwise simple outfit.
If you prefer a shorter necklace, try wearing it with an open cardigan or a V-neck sweater, where it can rest naturally against your skin.
And don't feel you need to put away your favourite shorter pieces just because the weather is changing.
Sometimes, simply changing the neckline of your sweater is all it takes.
A little styling tip: Before heading out, take a moment to see where your necklace falls. Ideally, it should sit comfortably above or below your neckline rather than becoming caught in the fabric.
2. Let sterling silver bring a little light to autumn colours
Autumn brings some of my favourite colours back into our wardrobes.
Deep forest greens, rich burgundies, warm camel, soft cream, and all those beautiful earthy shades we see in the changing landscape.
And sterling silver looks wonderful with every one of them.
Against darker colours, silver creates a lovely contrast. A simple silver necklace can bring a little brightness to a deep green sweater, while a pair of polished hoops looks beautiful with burgundy or charcoal.
With lighter neutrals, such as cream, oatmeal, or camel, silver creates a softer, more understated look.
It's one of the things I love most about working with sterling silver.
You don't have to change your jewelry every time you change your outfit. Its versatility allows you to move from one colour palette to another without giving it a second thought.
Try this: Choose one of your favourite autumn sweaters and pair it with a simple sterling silver necklace or earrings. Notice how the silver stands out against the fabric. Sometimes, that one small detail is all an outfit needs.
3. Choose earrings that work with scarves and sweaters
I love a beautiful scarf when the mornings turn chilly.
But when you're wearing a scarf, a high collar, or a chunky sweater, the earrings you choose can make a difference.
A pair of classic sterling silver hoops adds a little polish to a casual outfit without requiring much thought.
For days when you're wearing a bulky scarf, smaller hoops or simple studs can be especially practical. They sit closer to the ear and are less likely to catch on the fabric.
On days when you're wearing an open neckline or a simple sweater, a slightly larger hoop can be a beautiful finishing touch.
There's no need to save your favourite earrings for special occasions.
A pair of silver hoops, a cozy sweater, and your favourite jeans can be a lovely combination for an ordinary Tuesday.
A little styling tip: If you're wearing a scarf, put it on before choosing your earrings. You'll be able to see which size and style feels most comfortable with your outfit.
4. Don't forget your bracelets
When sweater weather arrives, bracelets can sometimes become an afterthought.
After all, what's the point of wearing a beautiful bracelet if it's hidden beneath your sleeves?
But I think a simple sterling silver bangle can be especially lovely in autumn.
Try wearing one with a sweater that has slightly shorter sleeves, or gently push your sleeves back to let the silver show.
A polished bangle adds a little movement and catches the light as you go about your day.
If you're wearing a fitted long-sleeved top, you can also try a bangle over the sleeve, provided it sits comfortably and doesn't pull at the fabric.
The important thing is to choose a combination that feels natural rather than something you're constantly having to adjust.
My favourite approach: Keep it simple. One beautiful bangle can be enough to bring a little interest to an otherwise casual outfit.
5. Bring a little of nature into your autumn wardrobe
Living here in the Okanagan, I'm surrounded by inspiration.
The trees, the hillsides, the changing colours, and the beautiful textures we see in nature all find their way into my jewelry designs.
And autumn is a wonderful time to bring some of those natural elements into what we wear.
Picture jasper, with its warm earthy patterns, looks beautiful against cream, brown, olive, and other autumn neutrals. A Picture Jasper Beaded Necklace is another lovely way to bring those natural colours into an everyday outfit.
Pearls are another favourite of mine.
A simple pearl necklace worn with a soft sweater or an open white shirt creates a look that feels classic without being overly formal.
You can also introduce texture through hammered silver, which catches the light differently from a smooth, polished surface.
You don't need to wear several statement pieces at once.
Choose one element you love — an interesting gemstone, a beautiful pearl, or a textured silver pendant — and allow it to be the finishing touch.
Your favourite pieces can move through every season
I think one of the loveliest things about having a collection of jewelry you truly enjoy wearing is discovering just how versatile those pieces can be.
The necklace you wore with a linen shirt all summer might look just as beautiful over a soft autumn sweater.
Your favourite hoops can take you from a morning walk to lunch with a friend.
And that simple silver bangle you've worn for years can become part of an entirely different look just by changing what you wear it with.
You don't need to start over every time the seasons change.
Sometimes, all it takes is looking at what you already own with fresh eyes.
So as you begin bringing out your favourite sweaters, scarves, and boots this autumn, take a little time to revisit your jewelry box, too.
You might be surprised by how many beautiful combinations are already waiting for you.
