How to Store Your Jewelry So It Stays Beautiful

How to Store Your Jewelry So It Stays Beautiful

Simple ways to protect the pieces you love and keep them looking their best.

There’s something rather lovely about opening your jewelry drawer and actually being able to see what you own.

No tangled chains.

No searching for the other earring.

No favourite necklace somehow tied in a knot with three bracelets. 😂

Jewelry is meant to be worn and enjoyed, and how we store it can make a surprisingly big difference — not only in keeping pieces looking beautiful, but in making them easier to reach for every day.

The good news is that you don’t need an elaborate jewelry room or a perfectly organized dressing table.

A few simple habits can go a long way.

Give Every Piece a Little Space

One of the easiest ways to care for your jewelry is simply to keep pieces separated.

Necklaces are especially prone to tangling when several chains are stored together, while earrings, rings and bracelets can scratch against one another when everything is tossed into the same compartment.

Small divided trays, soft-lined compartments or individual pouches make it much easier to keep pieces protected.

And there’s another benefit I love:

When you can actually see your jewelry, you’re much more likely to wear it.

Beautiful pieces shouldn’t disappear into the bottom of a drawer.

And if tangled necklaces are something you regularly battle, I’ve also shared a few ideas in How to Layer Necklaces Like a Pro for choosing different chains and textures that are easier to wear together.

Keep Sterling Silver Dry and Protected

Sterling silver naturally tarnishes over time. It’s a normal reaction that happens when silver is exposed to elements in the air and environment.

Proper storage can help slow that process.

When you aren’t wearing your sterling silver jewelry, keep it somewhere cool and dry, preferably in a soft pouch or enclosed compartment rather than leaving it exposed on a bathroom counter or dresser.

Humidity isn’t particularly helpful, which means the bathroom — convenient as it may seem — isn’t the best home for your silver collection.

Keeping pieces separate also helps prevent scratching and reduces the inevitable necklace tangle.

A Little Pouch Can Do a Lot

I include a soft jewelry pouch with Plein de Vie orders for exactly this reason.

They’re simple, but incredibly useful.

A pouch helps protect a piece when it isn’t being worn and makes it easy to tuck jewelry safely into your handbag or luggage when you’re travelling.

For necklaces, I like to take an extra moment before packing them rather than dropping several chains together into one pouch.

Because discovering a tiny silver knot when you’re trying to get ready for dinner is not my idea of a relaxing holiday. 😂

Be Gentle With Gemstones and Pearls

Not every piece of jewelry should be treated exactly the same way.

Pearls and some gemstones require a little more care than everyday sterling silver pieces. Rather than allowing them to rub against harder jewelry, give them their own soft compartment or pouch.

It’s also a good habit to put jewelry on after you’ve applied lotions, perfumes and other personal-care products.

And when you take your jewelry off at the end of the day, a quick wipe with a soft cloth before putting it away can help remove oils and residue from wear.

Small habits. Very little effort.

But over time, they make a difference.

Give Your Jewelry a Little Check-In

Every so often, take a few minutes to look through the pieces you wear most often.

Give your silver a polish if it needs one.

Check clasps and earring backs.

Make sure chains aren’t beginning to knot.

And perhaps rediscover something you haven’t worn in a while.

I actually like the idea of this being less of an organizing chore and more of a little jewelry ritual.

Put on some music. Make a coffee. Open the drawer.

You may be surprised by what you’ve forgotten you own.

Store It Well — But Wear It Too

There is, however, one thing I don’t want us to become too good at.

Saving our jewelry.

The point of caring for beautiful things isn’t to keep them tucked safely away forever.

It’s to help them last so we can enjoy wearing them.

The earrings you love.

The necklace that reminds you of someone.

The bracelet you bought to mark something important.

Or simply the piece that makes an ordinary outfit feel a little more like you.

That philosophy is really at the heart of Plein de Vie Jewelry — beautiful pieces are meant to move through our real lives, not wait in a box for someday.

Take care of your jewelry. Store it thoughtfully. And then wear it.

Because beautiful things are meant to be part of our lives.
