You Don’t Need a Special Occasion to Celebrate Yourself

You Don’t Need a Special Occasion to Celebrate Yourself

Some of the moments most worth celebrating never come with an invitation, a cake or a round of applause.

We’re very good at celebrating other people.

Birthdays. Anniversaries. Graduations. Weddings. New babies. Retirements.

We buy the card. Choose the gift. Make the reservation. Remember the date.

But somewhere along the way, many of us became much less comfortable celebrating ourselves.

Maybe because some accomplishments don’t look like traditional milestones.

Starting over.

Making a difficult decision.

Getting through a season that asked more of you than you expected.

Finally doing something you’ve talked yourself out of for years.

Choosing a quieter life.

Learning something new at 50, 60 or beyond.

Or simply looking around one day and realizing:

I built a life I really love.

Those moments count too.

Not Everything Worth Celebrating Is Big

When I look back at my own life, some of the decisions that changed it most didn’t feel particularly celebratory while I was making them.

They often felt uncertain.

There was no guarantee that I was making the right choice. I simply knew it was time for something different.

Years ago, I made a little silver Christmas ornament stamped with the word BELIEVE.

One Christmas, a woman purchased 21 of them for her exchange students. With each one went a message I had written about what that word meant to me.

The final E stood for:

Enjoy the simple things in life.

I still believe that.

Because when I look back now, I realize that some of the things most worth celebrating weren’t the big accomplishments at all.

They were the small moments along the way when I chose myself, trusted myself, began again — or simply stopped long enough to appreciate where I was.

Little places along the road that mattered, even if nobody else knew they did.

Those moments count too.

Celebration Can Be Quiet

Celebrating yourself doesn’t have to mean doing something extravagant.

It might be taking yourself somewhere beautiful for the afternoon.

Buying the flowers instead of walking past them.

Sitting by the lake with your coffee and nowhere you need to be.

Wearing the beautiful blouse on an ordinary Tuesday.

Or choosing a piece of jewelry because it reminds you of a particular chapter in your life.

The point isn’t what you choose.

It’s the pause.

That small moment when you acknowledge:

This mattered to me.

And perhaps that's part of learning to recognize what is enough too — noticing the life we already have instead of always looking toward the next milestone.

Why Jewelry Can Hold So Much Meaning

I’ve always loved that jewelry becomes attached to our memories.

A necklace can remind you of a trip.

A bracelet can mark a birthday you felt particularly grateful to reach.

A pair of earrings can take you back to a wonderful afternoon with a friend.

And sometimes you buy the piece yourself simply because you loved it.

That story counts too.

There is something wonderfully grown-up about no longer waiting for someone else to decide when you deserve something beautiful.

You get to decide.

And years later, when you fasten that bracelet or reach for those earrings, you may remember much more than what you were wearing.

You remember who you were becoming.

That’s one reason I’ve always been drawn to creating sterling silver jewelry for everyday life — pieces that can become part of our own stories rather than being saved only for special occasions.

Your Life Is Happening Now

I think that may be the part we forget.

We save things for someday.

The good dishes.

The beautiful clothes.

The trip.

The jewelry.

The celebration.

Meanwhile, ordinary Tuesday after ordinary Tuesday quietly becomes our life.

So perhaps we don’t need to wait quite so much.

Wear the beautiful things.

Notice what you’ve accomplished.

Celebrate the small beginnings as much as the big endings.

And every once in a while, choose something simply because it brings you joy.

Life doesn’t have to provide a special occasion.

Sometimes being here to enjoy it is occasion enough.

And perhaps that's what I want Plein de Vie Jewelry to celebrate most of all: not only life's milestones, but all the beautiful ordinary days in between.
